What is the correct way to clean the refrigerator and the freezer?
Refrigerators and freezers are indispensable in the kitchen and are the most used appliance. Keeping it clean and sanitized is necessary not just for health reasons but also work correctly and therefore last longer. The external surface can be cleaned with warm soapy water using a soft cloth.
How often do you clean them?
It is important to do a complete clean of the appliance at least twice a year. This will prevent mildew and unpleasant odours forming. The freezer must be regularly defrosted reduce the build up of ice.
To clean the interior shelving it is advised to use warm water with baking soda or vinegar. Do not use cleaning materials that may release harmful substances or odours to food. Also do not use anything that is abrasive or will generate foam. Ensure that you rinse the interior of the fridge & freezer.
For periodic cleaning of the fridge:
Empty it completely, throw away the expired or
spoiled foods and reorganize those in good condition, keeping them in a thermal bag to prevent their until you have completed the cleaning;
Remove all removable parts and disassemble shelves and accessories in order to reach all corners. Wash the removable parts with soapy water; wash the interior surfaces with water and vinegar (or baking soda);
To collect water that may fall during washing, place a towel on the bottom of the fridge so that it absorbs the drops.
Reassemble all the washed and dried parts.
Pay special attention to the seals: wash and dry them well lubricate with a few drops of oil to keep them soft.
For periodic cleaning of the freezer:
Empty it completely, helping you with a thermal bag at the right temperature during cleaning; leave the door open for a few minutes to allow the ice to melt.
Defrost the freezer by removing the biggest blocks of ice with the special plastic small shovel. Never use blades or steel tools, as this may damage the freezer.
Fill a spray container with warm water and vinegar in equal parts and spray the interior walls and the fixed floors and then move on with a sponge cloth, repeating the operation if necessary;
Ensure that you dry the sides of the freezer before reintroducing the frozen food. Check that the freezer temperature has reached -18 C.
Do not place packaging or food against the walls of the refrigerator. Do not overload the freezer compartments and distribute food throughout the freezer to ensure the even circulation of cold air. Don't place uncovered food directly on the shelves or in the freezer compartment, and always store in order of expirey date order so that you have everything in view and consume the food before it deteriorates.
To keep your refrigerator odour free, place a small jar with a few tablespoons of backing soda or with soaked cotton wool with vinegar.
Before leaving on a long trip, make sure that there aren’t food in the refrigerator at risk, check all expiry dates.
Avoid leaving meat, fish or vegetables, even if frozen, to limit the damage in case of unexpected electric interruption.
To clean the refrigerator and the freezer in your holiday home that will remain closed for a long time, before leaving remember to leave the doors of the refrigerator open after completely emptying it, leave it off and clean it to prevent the formation of mold and bad odours and switch the appliance off.
